Prom Night in Mississippi
- 1970
- White parents didn't integrate school dances and events between white and black students.
- Morgan Freeman offers to pay for the integrated dance three times. Only the third time did the schoolboard accept and try.
- Parents don't want to change and integrate. The school board however does want to.
- The parents even threatened to kill black friends of white people if they stepped onto their property. Example with Jessica and Calvin.
- Andy
- Is white, but is friends with all races.
- Most students are friends with other races. But their parents seem to be the cause.
- Students are more than okay to have a single prom, un-separated.
- A fight happened between a black female and white female. Because the white female said she wouldn't attend the joint prom. The school admin believed the story the white female told about the black female threatening her and bringing a gun.
- Even with the integrated dance / prom, there are still some parents who are organizing a white only prom.
- Some parents still were racist but let their kids choose.
- Operant conditioning
- Example: When Glenn Sumner grounded her daughter to try to stop her from dating a black man.
- Defense mechanism
- When Glenn Sumner rationalized his decisions by saying, I'm still the parent and I still have control.
- He took a decision based off emotion, then rationalized.
- He also rationalized it by saying he wants her daughter to be experienced and to know things about the real world. Putting the idea of an interracial couple below him.
- Not much interracial couples.
- Only a few in all of charleston.
- Most white people are brought up to date white people. And black people are brought up to date black people.
- Religious problem
- Traditional problem
- Glenn Sumner's parents and grand parents were racists and taught individual races to stick to their own. So he wants to continue that and teach that to her daughter.
- Having black friends as a white person also limits where you can get jobs.
- Cops took down the pants of the black people on the highways all because the racism is just that bad. It's not a they + us situation, it's a they vs. us situation.
- White prom was like any normal prom, with food, dance, etc. One fight happened.
- One of the white kids got told that they would go to jail for going to the integrated prom.
- One guys wants to have a threesome with two girls he asked out.
- The security and police are at the prom and think there might be some problems. However the students have faith.
- A black girl was going to be valedictorian, however a white girl got it. They also didn't show any proof showing the white girl's gpa was higher.
- Mona Rippee
- Chance's Mom
- Says she had black and white friends all throughout high school. But it was just a thing to have seperate proms, so they just went along with it and didn't question it.
- White prom meeting
- Used the n-word a lot
- White parents saying that they wouldn't have mixed babies in their family.
