Alienation
-
↑
-
Inequal access, privilege to certain social groups.
-
Exclusion can summarize this.
-
Micro
- With a small group of friends
-
Macro
- Socioeconomic differences in ses.
- Someone not hiring someone from a poor background, even if they're more qualified.
-
Consequnces
- Don't think marginalised people can progress. There are other forces at play against them they don't have full control over (skill issue though).
- Can create devious people or sub cultures.
- Sub-Culture
- A culture inside another culture, those people share similar ideas which are different than the larger group they are within, but share it with the Sub-Culture. A common identity for each Sub-Culture.
- They may be alienated.
- Sub-Culture
-
Collective behaviours
- Mob mentality
- Spontaneous gatherings based on a goal. Response to natural catastrophies.
-
Convergence Theory
- When a large group converges, there is collective action that happens quicker. Because there's a postive feedback loop of their ideas.
-
Theory of rational decisions
- There is a moment where we take action after taking in all information instantly available.
- The threshold is the difference. How many people would do it?
- How many people need to do something for you to do it aswell. That is threshold.
-
Prosocial Behaviour
- Collectively good behaviours exist.
- Where a large community will help others. This strengthens their social bonds and community aspect.
-
Stereotypes
- Discrimination
- Treat certain groups unfair based on their traits
- Asians are bad drivers
- Asians are good at math
- Types
- Manifested
- Direct actions taken, either upon past experiences or by stereotypes.
- Systemic
- Systems put in place by structural functionalist ideas that should help all of society, but is implemented in a way where a certain group is disadvantaged, either intentionally or subconsciously.
- Manifested
- Discrimination
-
Causes of stereotypes?
- Learning Theory
- Judgements aren't innate
- Based on Social Status
- Socializing between people
- Competition Theory
- Economic value also determines someone's place socially and can also mean that.
- People taking your place in the workforce means that they're a threat, so you'll do something about that.
- Enforced by a group vs. group mentality that needs to be there to have a feedback loop inside each group to move forward. This can be positive (Hamza) or negative (Porn and it's acceptability in society).
- Frustration + Agression Theory
- Being mad at those who achieve what you want easily (they don't almost ever, if they do, it doesn't last).
- This can be used to generate positive loops or negative. Ex: Hamza and Nazis
- Ignorance Theory
- No experience with a certain group can make you more likely to believe things about them that may not be true.
- High ego can mean higher barrier to change someone's mind
- Or narcissists
- Ex:
- Evaluating other cultures based on your culture (Doesn't make sense, but people are ignorant and egotistical to acknowledge this, thus why it's common enough to be here).
- Learning Theory
